Arizona and California to provide host sites
The United States Golf Association will host five championships this summer and fall in the Southwest region. The U.S. Amateur kicks off August 11-17 at The Olympic Club in San Francisco, Calif.
This will be the 125th playing of the U.S. Amateur and it remains the most important amateur championship in golf. The event will feature 312 players competing over two days of stroke play at Olympics Lake and Ocean courses with the low 64 players advancing to the match play portion of the championship. Olympic Club Director of Golf Maintenance Troy Flanagan, a 29-year member of GCSAA, will serve as the host superintendent.
In addition to the U.S. Amateur, four other events will be taking place in the region:
- The U.S. Senior Women’s Open will take place Aug. 21-24 at San Diego Country Club. 27-year GCSAA member Jack Aldrich will serve as the host superintendent for an event that will feature the best women amateurs over the age of 50. San Diego C.C. previously hosted the 2017 U.S. Women’s Amateur.
- The bi-annual Walker Cup will be played from Sept. 6-8 at the famed Cypress Point Golf Club in Pebble Beach, Calif. 43-year GCSAA member Jeff Markow, CGCS, will host the match, which pits the United States against Great Britain/Ireland. The United States will be defending the Cup which they have held since 2017.
- The U.S. Mid-Amateur will be held Sept. 13-18 at Troon North in Scottsdale, Ariz. 30-year GCSAA member Brad Anderson will serve as host superintendent for the event, which features amateur men over the age of 25. The facility hosted the 2023 U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur in 2023.
- Monterey Peninsula Country Club in Pebble Beach, Calif., will host the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Oct. 4-10 on its Dunes Course. 31-year GCSAA member Chris Dalhamer, CGCS, will serve as host of the event. The tournament features amateur women over the age of 25. Dalhamer has previously overseen two U.S. Opens while at Pebble Beach.
Congratulations to all the host facilities, superintendents and staff who will be putting in long hours to highlight golf at its highest levels. For more information on the championships, visit the USGA's website.
