Equipment manager at Ansley Golf Club in Atlanta, Ga., wins annual award, presented in partnership with Foley United
Lawrence, Kan. (Sept. 6, 2018) — Trent Manning, the equipment manager at Ansley Golf Club in Atlanta, has been selected as the recipient of the 2018 Most Valuable Technician Award, presented by the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) and Golf Course Management (GCM) magazine in partnership with Foley United.
Now in its ninth year, the award recognizes excellence among golf course equipment managers and the vital role they play in the golf course management industry. Equipment managers are nominated by their golf course superintendent, and a panel of industry judges narrows those nominations down to three finalists, who are then voted on by GCSAA members through an online voting process.
"Golf course superintendents have never been shy about extolling the virtues of their equipment managers and the important role they play in golf course maintenance operations,” said Rhett Evans, GCSAA CEO. “GCSAA has followed suit by supporting equipment managers through a membership classification within the association exclusively for equipment managers— one that now boasts more than 800 members — and through programs such as the Most Valuable Technician Award.
“Trent Manning has been one of the most dedicated equipment managers in the business. He’s an institution at Ansley Golf Club who gives back to the industry and to his community, and we’re honored to recognize him for all his achievements.”
Manning has a long history in golf course management, first starting at Ansley Golf Club when he was in high school. That background gives him not only a deep knowledge of the nuts and bolts of the equipment business, but also a significant understanding of irrigation, agronomy and staff management. He gives back to the industry through service to his local chapter, the Georgia GCSA, and on the national level with GCSAA. He also gives time to his community as a member of a volunteer search-and-rescue team. In his spare time, Manning serves as a competitive barbecue judge, loves to fish and is an enthusiastic and supportive family man.
“Things like the MVT aren’t things I seek out,” Manning said. “I like doing what I do behind the scenes. But to say I’m not honored to get this award would be wrong. I know it’s a special recognition, and I’m grateful to everyone who voted for me.”
Courtney Young, CGCS, the director of agronomy at Ansley Golf Club, said, “I feel like it’s important to recognize people, and in Trent’s instance, I’m glad that GCSAA and Foley United offered us a venue to do just that, Trent absolutely deserves this award, and I’m just pleased that others in the industry obviously saw a lot of the same things in him that I do.”
Foley United has served as the presenting partner of the Most Valuable Technician Award since its inception in 2010. “We are extremely proud of our continued association with this award,” said Paul Rauker, Foley’s president/CEO. “Equipment managers are our primary customers here at Foley United, so to be able to give back a little to those customers and acknowledge them for their outstanding work is something that is very gratifying for all of us at Foley United. We congratulate Trent for winning this year’s award and for all he has accomplished at Ansley Golf Club. He is most deserving of this honor.”
Also selected as finalists for this year’s Most Valuable Technician Award were Patrick Drinkard, the equipment manager at The Clubs at Cordillera Ranch in Boerne, Texas, and Hector Velasquez, the equipment manager at Riverside Country Club in Provo, Utah.
