First Green Field Trip to be held at PGA TOUR’s Farmers Insurance Open

by Jeff Jensen | Jan 02, 2023

Field trip co-hosted by the Century Club of San Diego, Farmers Insurance, GCSAA and the San Diego GCSA

The PGA TOUR’s Farmers Insurance Open will host a First Green Field Trip on Monday, January 23, 2023, at Torrey Pines Golf Club in San Diego.  The field trip, co-hosted by the Century Club of San Diego, Farmers Insurance, GCSAA and the San Diego GCSA will kickstart the tournament week.

First Green, a Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) program, pairs golf courses with local schools for unique Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) learning opportunities. Founded in 1997 it is the only STEM education and environmental outreach program in the United States and Canada that uses golf courses as learning labs.

The field trip will host 60 seventh grade students from Millennial Tech who will be treated to a day of STEM learning as well as a golf industry career panel and a golf clinic taught by PGA TOUR Professionals participating in the tournament.  Labs will include soils, math, water conservation and wildlife habitat and the environment.  The host Superintendent for the event is GCSAA member Devin Cullen.

San Diego GCSA members volunteering to host the learning labs including President Brandon Williams, Vice President Matt Partridge, Chapter Executive Sandy Cooper, board members Todd Kochanowski, Cody Stewart and Austin Daniells as well as Paul Brown, Jim Culley, Kimberly Gard, Chris Hayman, Trevor Larsen, Rob Maycock, Kevin Plageman, Brendon Reaksecker, Bill Sinclair, and Craig Zellers.

GCSAA would like to thank the City of San Diego as well as The Century Club and Farmers for their interest in promoting First Green, the golf industry and GCSAA.  More information on the Farmers Insurance is available at https://www.farmersinsuranceopen.com and complete information of First Green and how to host a field trip can be found at https://www.thefirstgreen.org
