The California Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR) is actively engaged in the mitigation of anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) through a series of legislative prohibitions, reevaluations and upcoming regulations. The DPR hosted an informal public workshop on Sept. 24, 2025, to present proposed mitigation for both SGARs and FGARs and to open a 30-day public comment period on the materials. The draft proposed regulations included new requirements for a Sustainable Rodent Management Plan and mandatory annual training for applicators.
Since Jan. 1, 2021 (under AB 1788), most uses of four SGARs (brodifacoum, bromadiolone, difenacoum and difethialone) have been prohibited in California, including on golf course playing surfaces. Effective Jan. 1, 2025 (under AB 2552), most uses of the FGARs chlorophacinone and warfarin were also prohibited, including on golf course playing surfaces.
The DPR is working toward establishing comprehensive, permanent regulations and restrictions on anticoagulant rodenticides to protect non-target wildlife and public health, while the current temporary statutory prohibitions remain in place until the reevaluation and rulemaking processes are finalized.
GCSAA has weighed in with public comment on some of the changes being proposed on the use of anticoagulant rodenticides around structures including food establishments. Here are the comments submitted to the California DPR last week. Upon review, please let the government affairs team know if you have any additional questions.
