Election Day is Nov. 3, with many states beginning early in-person voting in mid-October. Now is a good time to make sure you have the information you need before voting begins.

Voting is one of the primary ways Americans participate in our representative democracy. Elections determine who will make decisions at the federal, state and local levels on issues affecting communities, workplaces and everyday life 

Before Election Day arrives, one simple step can prevent problems later: check your voter registration.

Even if you have voted before, it is worth confirming that your registration is active and that your name and address are correct. Registration requirements and deadlines vary by state.

You can verify your voter registration through your state or local election office. The U.S. Election Assistance Commission's vote.gov provides a starting point for finding your state's official voter registration information.

When checking your registration:

• Confirm that you are registered to vote.
• Make sure your name and residential address are current.
• Review your state's voter registration deadline.
• Check your polling location and voting requirements.
• Learn about your state's early, absentee or mail voting options if you plan to use them.

Be especially careful when relying on election information found on social media or other unofficial sources. State and local election offices are the best sources for deadlines, polling locations and voting requirements.
