What do you folks do to recharge yourselves after a most trying and difficult season professionally and/or personally?

This year was a tough year for alot of superintendents with the drought tornadoes floods we had a little of everything. It is time to go race my four wheeler and go fishing that is how I relax and forget about this year and mentally prepare for next year. My year is going to start early as we are starting a new 6 hole practice facility and new pump station along with an irrigation upgrade electric over hydraulic on the existing golf course starting in January. I hope everybody has a nice break and gets to relax and reflect on this past year .

We don't get breaks...summer is construction and aerification season and winter is our busy play time of the year. That multiplied by 4 courses for me and I never get a break. So what do I do to recharge? Take time off and have faith and trust in my assistants. Time off is the only way to go, even if it is just a day or two. I also like to go visit other peoples courses. Not only does that make you feel better about your own by seeing their problems or successes but you might pick up something along the way.

I agree with what Andy said, while I don't have an assistant, I do have a trustworthy guy on my crew who will handle crisis if needed, or will at least not make things worse. It can allow me to get away a day or so.

This October has been great, with a freshman in high school band we have attended band contest 4 of the 5 weekends, have fun rooting on the kids on Saturday and by the time we get home Saturday night or more like Sunday morning, we end up just lounging on Sundays. Don't know what we will do here in November.

I just thank the lord that I don't do this job in Florida and that all the cranky Canadian members divulge their wisdom to you guys each winter

Bunch of whiners. Come on down here and find out what it's like to work all year long. Better yet, stay home, we don't like you that much.

How tough can it be to go out and paint dormant bermuda green and then sit around for a week or two waiting to put on another coat of paint? It can't be as tough now as it was in the old days when you guys used to overseed everything with northern type grasses and actually did have to work all year round. :P

How about battling the summer heat, then seeding 60+ acres of rye for the snowbirds who come to Fla for green, not brown anymore.....then try to keep in March and April when heat and wind kick up and the course has about 275 players a day.....that is what we do til March!

Funny. My bermuda never goes dormant. I have never painted a green and I overseed everything except greens.

Enjoy your winter. Stay up north.

    Dave,

Don't let those guys fool you, I grew up in the south, wasn't so hard, played golf all year around, heck I got so spoiled I wouldn't play when it was below 60 degrees out.

They get summers off Dave. Pina Coladas and cheeseburgers all day and everyday.

    Doug,

I think you have to put things in perspective. Drink a little wine, fix some nice food recipes off of food network and share with some friends. Make some homemade pizza and have a party. Pizzeria Luigi in San Diego has a great thin crust recipe. http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/pizz ... index.html
Get away for a week or two at a time if you have the chance. Take a fishing trip or just do some walking in a nice and peaceful place. Volunteer with a kids group or go visit some folks a little less fortunate than yourself and or do some good work in your community. Do things that are not necessarily about one's self. During some down periods we have a tendency to focus too much on ourselves.

Get on an exercise program in the winter which helps get those endorphin's firing to bring your mood back up again and get you excited about the new year ahead.

I don't have much choice Steve. I have the fun task of managing the food and beverage concessions at our city arenas over the winter months.Hopefully by the time I am able to head south for golf you guys will have forgotten the digs and let me into the fine state of Florida. I promise not to ask for any comped golf if you guys will keep the fees at regular price and not double them based on my comments :D

Yeah, we assume you go dormant. Just like your members who come down here for the winter assume that we do nothing but go the beach all summer.

    Come on, man....it's a joke.

Take it easy. Just asking a question - I figured everyone was joking but I was curious about what perceptions someone who has spent their entire career down south has about winters up here.
