If we do not keep them healthy and educate them, how can we expect them to become good soldiers?

So if we eradicated hunger until the 70's, then Reagan threw money at the issue, then Bush, then Clinton, then Bush, now Obama and the problem keeps getting worse, what are we doing to help the situation? Sounds like we are making it worse. Just keep creating and fueling a society where people are raised on the govt dole and you can bet it will keep getting bigger. Make each individual have no accountability and the dependent society will multiply. Oh wait it has.

if i throw out a bag of money in front of one person in new york city and they start scooping it up, what is going to happen? Eventually you will have a huge crowd picking up the money until its gone. You start handing out free money and food stamps to some, eventually it will keep getting bigger and bigger and bigger, until there is nothing left to give away, unless you confiscate it from someone else. Oh but then its in the name of compassion so thats ok.

We nearly eradicated hunger in America in the 70's, not "until" the 70's.

We have no hunger in American when you compare it to real hunger in other countries, Even our very poor are frequently grossly over weight.

The issue is more malnutrition and sporadic hunger (missed meals and days without food) than starvation.

I have to agree with Scott on this one, every successful diet says to eat many meals, no skipping of meals, when the poor and that includes the working poor living paycheck to paycheck, purchase foods, they typically buy the cheapest stuff which isn't probably the best for us, throw in a missed meal, and the opportunity to overeat is there. I know it happens to me when I skip a meal. Of course there are more factors to consider, genetics, different or abnormal work shifts, and a variety of other things that play into it. Look at what milk cost compared to kool-aid, when there are so many dollars to buy things...

Just using San Diego as an example but there is really no excuse for anyone to suffer from hunger issues. We have several places people can go to eat. The St. Vincent de Paul Center feeds something like 4000 people daily and other charities are available as well.

Whether or not people go hungry in this country is accepted as truth by both sides of the aisle. No one is arguing that government programs, food banks and charities keep people from starving to death. There are 40 million people in this country that do not eat every day of the week.

I know some people that miss some meals. Its called a diet. Might help the obesity problem in this country, because supposedly we are the most obese country in the world. Food banks, churches, charities and other organizations do a great job helping those that need it. We dont need to spend another federal dollar on any more food programs. We already spend over 8 billion dollars per year on school lunch programs. if every kid is in school everyday, no child will go hungry. And since the parents dont have to pay for them to eat during the week, is it too much to ask the parents to feed their kids on the weekends?

I guess we won't need to feed them so it doesn't matter if they are hungry or not. In someone's infinite wisdom the new plan is to "layoff" many thousands of soldiers, Marines, airmen and sailors and up to 5000 officers. The war on terror is over and we need to downsize the military. Did al Quida get the memo?

What we should do is DOWNSIZE the federal bureaucracy in Washington DC......we have departments in the federal govt that could staff a divsion of grunts.

PS ...........there will always be hungry people in America as well as the world and there is an abundance of FAT people in this country.........they may be hungry but they're still fat!

I have to ask what percent of the so-called hungry play lotto scratch off tickets, smoke, drink soft drinks all day, drink alcohol, buy drugs, have flat screen HD TV's, smart phones, the latest trendy athletic shoes etc. I have seen it within my extended family. I would feel sorry for the kids but somehow they have the latest toys! If you subtract those types of hungry and the so-called homeless in the center divider of roads begging for money when there is a sign advertising jobs at the fast food place 50 yards away, the drunks looking for more booze etc. what percent actually remains? I have no doubts we have some that truly have issues with hunger and I feel for them. Not so much for the people listed above that are simply not managing the resources they have and are totally irresponsible. Also, a study has been done that blows away the myth that poor people can only afford the fat foods. Decent food is available at affordable prices but many choose to buy the fat junk because they enjoy it. I would probably be one of those poorly disciplined because I would rather eat twinkies rather than beans and carrots. I don't however because I understand it will hurt my health.

The last 4 posts hit it perfectly. (especially the 20s) My question would be if they are surveying people to find out whos hungry or starving what questions do they ask? When and where do these people fill out the surveys. How do they come up with the figure of over 40 mil. Census????

In some people's mind everyone is a victim.......simply amazing. Yes there are poor.......have been for centuries will be till the end of time. A few by misfortune, some by simply being born in the wrong place, some again are fat and lazy and prefer to mooch off of society. My wife and I have been fortunate in life, certainly not rich but comfortable. Two kids grown , gone and successful. We are lucky to not want for anything except praying for continued good health. And believe it or not we actually give back. We assist those that truly need assistance. But I feel NO pity for the bum holding the sign at the interstate ramp, no pity for the food stamp user in front of me at Wal-Mart that has a basket full of junk food and weighs in at 300 lbs. You can actually eat cheap in this country and healthy if you want too. You ever notice the TV ads of the kids in Africa..........skinny and malnourished........they do tug at your heart strings..........notice the same in the US........could be offensive lineman in the NFL. Have had my two rants on this topic.

I understand where you guys are coming from. I see people beat the system too. The weak I refer to includes those people. There are so many reasons why someone could be messed up like that including psychological deficiencies that only by God's grace I do not possess. Whether or not you believe Jesus is God taking on flesh, historically we can prove he existed and he said some very profound stuff like the poor will always be with us and we should help the weak. I see my stuff and my bank account as gifts that were given to me, not as stuff I deserve.

Well, nobody said it was going to be easy. Jesus said things were going to be as hard as heck and that people would hate you for your beliefs -- especially if you were doing it right. So, I think you're right on track, Bob.
