Ga Tech just got hit with NCAA violations for not playing fair. Four years probabtion, lost of recruiting days, $100,000 fine, loss of their 2009 ACC title and limitations placed on the basketball program as well. Rambling Wreck fits the Yellow jackets well right now. OSU still waiting for their time in the box with the NCAA next month. Their self imposed sanctions I have a feeling will not be all they come away with. WVa linebacker arrested for two armed robberies and is now in jail...........guess after the first haul he wasn't happy with his take. At the SEC summer meetings last week in Destin, Fl Gene Chizik asked a NCAA compliance officer who was there to speak to the coachs why Auburn had not gotten a letter from the NCAA concerning Newtongate........the official replied........."because we are not through with our investigation" ..........oops..bad question Coach. And now the new golden boy of the west coast is under scrutny at Oregon, Chip Kelly. After his leading kick returner took a 115 mph joy ride in a borrowed car from a school offiical (that's a no no) now they have some quesitons about a recruiting service and a $25,000 check issued shortly after the siging of a running back from Texas last year. And its just July and two weeks from football beginning.........the teams have to keep the fans involved somehow I guess

David, I know my Aztecs have had some pretty lean years until 2010 and 2011 but at least we can say the program has been clean. Well, maybe if we had been winning in two sports for a decade, the program would have received more scrutiny but as far as I know it has only been a graduation rate issue the Aztecs have faced. I have to admit, we don't have a stable full of top recruits in the program but we have had some big names over the years. Marshall Faulk admitted in an interview that considering his families financial condition, if he had been offered big money by an alumnus, he would probably have taken it.

Bear in mind that the GTech violation involved perceived perks worth $312 for one player that the coaches knew nothing about. In fact, the NCAA is mostly upset that the coaches, and then the player, were informed of the investigation by the GTech admin. The investigation was apparently supposed to be secret. I suppose that's a little more than the illegal cookout that cost Bruce Pearl his career at Tennessee. Meanwhile, big time offenders are left alone unless a news agency breaks the investigation open. The NCAA is a joke.

Sandy my son headed west in a 1986 Nissan pickup truck and came home with it from SDSU. Marshall Fault crossed the country on I-10 more than once as a passenger in it. Marshall was and still is a class act considering where the young man came from.....the Desire Street Projects of New Orleans.

Gus part of GaTech problems were stonewalling & a coverup . The vacating the 2009 ACC title is a little too little to late. Are they going to give back the rings? But hey you steal 6 range balls and put them in your bag or a dozen Pro V's it's still stealing anyway you look at it. Not a fan of the NCAA but hope they bust anyone caught cheating. Took 5-6 years to get USC but they did.......may take that long on Cam as well.

I'll be glad when September 3rd gets here

Dave, they have already probably pawned off their rings or traded for tattoos. Nice story about Marshall, there is still hope for us yet.

Amazing thing about range balls. We just put out brand new balls about 2-3 weeks ago and amazing how many I am finding everywhere but on the range. The old ones (about 18 months old) could not get someone to steal them.

    David,

Isn't LSU involved with this same recruiting service (Will Lyles) and has signed some of the kids he has influence on, including former LSU star cornerback Patrick Peterson?

Rick..........LSU did use Lyles services.......primarily for Juco players from Kansas and Texas. We signed one kid Mettenbeger that had been released from Georgia in 2009 but Lyles had no involvement with his recruitment. We paid Lyles $6k and from I can tell got nothing for whatever services he provided the school. He was not involved at in the recruiting of Patrick (Johnsom) Peterson at LSU. He is on record of telling Texas A&M it would take $80k to sign him. Peterson came out of Florida and Lyles "sphere of influence" lies within the state of Texas.

Yes Gus we got our hands slapped and knew it was coming. The AD was proactive and not reactive and fired the coach immediately when the allegations became known of his shady recruiting practices. The Hicks kid never played a down or suited up at LSU.......last heard he was playing college football in Canada (what?). They self imposed a cut in scholarhips (only signed 23 vs the NCAA allowable 25) and cut both on campus and off campus recruiting visits by both coaches and players they bring in to visit. Unlike Ga Tech there was no attempt to hide the misfractions or try to make light of it. LSU compliance officer reacted immediately and took what he deemed appropriate steps to correc the wroing doing. Apparently the NCAA felt the same.

A little off topic but... It's somewhat legal, and a little unethical. But over signing players is a huge problem that should be addressed by conferences and the NCAA. It is rampant in college football and baseball. Mainly in the south. Just saying... check out oversign.com pretty sure that is the web site that details it.

Jeff the SEC was guilt of that oversigning but at the conference spring meetings of the SEC the league presidents voted to hold the number to 25 as mandated by the NCAA. Not sure how you over sign in baseball at the collegiate level with scholarships capped at roughly 11 at D 1 schools. Many if not most on the LSU roster qualify for TOPS scholarships if an instate recruit. A bill modele after Georgia some years ago that pays in state tuition to any student if he or she met the ACT scors and had a hs gpa of 2.5 or greater and maintains that in college. The recruits in baseball come from a little different background than most football and hoops players......most really are student athletes.

Mel don't leave out Bobby Bowden if talking about the ole days or Woody H or Schemblecker or John Robinson or any of the guys from the 60's thru the early 80's

Bobby who? How quickly we forget after the season we just had. Although curious how they would have done with Bobby at the helm. Defensively was the problem, as Micky Andrews didn't change his schemes with the talent.

Dave's correct with the mostly non revenue sports. Sometimes they will split scholarships among players, get the non athletic scholarships if they qualify. Especially true at D-III where there are no athletic scholarships. We always joked at the little university I worked at that they switched from NAIA to D-III so the president wouldn't have to give out athletic scholarships and save that money to build his empire.

Smart move on his part.........he had just signed a 3 year extension at the same salary $500,000 per year. Then spoke with UT and managed a $250k bump per year. Imagine that. I know it's hard to make it on only $500k in Baton Rouge.........you know with buying a car........uhhhhhhh no thats free...........country club dues........uh no thats free also...........eating out.............love to know the last time he picked up a check in BR. It's tough out there in the athletic world these days

    Here we go again:

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/w ... =hp_t11_a2

Miami is headed for a big one. I mean, if UT can lose a coach over a cookout, Boise can become a probie because recruits hitched rides from other players and sacked out on couches, then Miami surely deserves the death penalty. Oh wait, certain schools don't get that. Ohio State gets slapped on the wrist, and Auburn "nothing to see here folks" doesn't even get looked at.

Meanwhile, I told you all that something stunk about the USC penalties. The penalties never matched the perceived violation or the evidence. Now we know this guy Dee was behind it. Classic Salem defense- "I'm not a witch, he's the witch!"

Mark Emmert of the NCAA says the death penalty is an option. If he is serious about cleaning things up that's a good place to start. It went on from 2002 till present, involving over 70 different players, three basketball coaches including the head coach, 4 football coaches including the recruiting co-ordinator........hmmmm if it smells like fish, indeed it might be just that. Jon Vilma of the Saints was asked about the guy and his response was ......."I barely knew him"..........but Jon what about this picture of you and him with his arm around you on what looks to be a yatch.

Our esteemed leader Jordan Jefferson, whom we have been hearing all summer about his maturity since last season was involved in a fight outside a barroom Friday morning at 1:30 am...........seems the boys made curfew at 10:30 bed check and then checked out for some extra cirricular fun............as my dad always told me, nothing good happens after midnight. The four involved in the fight were supposed to report to the police department this morning for questioning but their lawyer got it delayed until Tuesday..........not enough time since Friday to plan a defense I suppose. Two of the four are starters and if involved as it appears they are I hope Miles suspends them both............all of the others and there were others involved in curfew violation should be running Tiger Stadium steps until they drop and run um again. A Marine home from Afganistan got kicked while on the ground as he came to the aid of the guy they pulled from his truck for blowing his horn at them to get them to move..........throw the book at them Dano!

Our Baton Rouge 4 appeared at State Police headquarters to be interrogated by BRPD yesterday in regards to their curfew breaking, bar fighthing melee of last week. The four civlians in the fight were all injured, two rather seriously with the Marine receiving three broken vertebrate and being knocked unconcious. The four LSU football players ranging in size from 6'1, 190 (wide receiver) to 6'5, 300 lbs (O tackle) were uninjured (imagine that). After the interviews they all left in attorney provided vehicles without comment. Their attorney has fees of somewhere in the $200-300 per hour rate and said he would handle this pro bono. LSU athletic department immediately said whoooooooooooa hoss.......that smacks of NCAA violations. The question of who is paying is still unknown. No arrest was made and the investigaton is still in progress. Sure it will last well past September 3 and the Oregon game.

Yesterday Ole Miss suspended a potential starting QB after a bar fight Monday night. Justice is swifter apparently in Mississippi.

Jordan Jefferson is the second quaterback in Les Miles tenure that he has hung his hat on with very disappointing results...........first Ryan Perriloux......a total bust and gangster and now apparently JJ. Jimbo Fisher was opposed to his being signed saying he was NOT an SEC caliber QB...........two pitiful years and one badly starting off season has proved Jimbo correct.

Uh Oh. More Bad news from Knoxville. Fresh off of hearing that the first lady of Tennessee, Pat Summit, has dementia, now it appears that Janzen Jackson, our on again off again best defensive player, hase been kicked off the team for good. After being suspended for his minor role in an armed robbery last year (stoned out of his mind, wearing UT football sweats, and having a long and apparently hilarious conversation with an ICEE machine), then voluntarily leaving the team for a semester to attend his brother's murder trial, he has apparently failed yet another drug test. Good player (maybe great), but good riddance. Watch out DMAC, another young criminal thug is headed back home to Louisiana.

I'm sure that around September 5th or 6th the police will announce their findings and Les Miles will suspend those involved for 1 or 2 games. It is amazing that four college kids can get one of the best criminal defense attorneys in the state to defend them. I wonder if LSU keeps this guy on retainer for all their students, or just their prized student athletes?

I think it's designed so that when the Maryland D-line is lined up against the opponent's O-line, the Maryland guys will be bobbing their heads like bobblehead dolls with the explicit intention of hypnotizing their opponents. That can be the only reason for a helmet that looks like that.

It seems after the BRPD interrogations of yesterday morning, they paid a visit to Jordan Jefferson's off campus apartment, with a search warrant and removed 20-30 bags of evidence. I would assume they were confiscating shoes and clothing that may contain both blood of the victims and or DNA. None of the other three players apt's were searched. Things not looking good for JJ at the moment. But as Rick put it and I previously, I do not think an arrest will be made until after the return from Dallas. Be very surprised if anything differently happened. Miles took a ton on heat on his first live radio broadcast from a local watering hole last night...........most of it negative.

Yea Gus, how ironic, another JJ, Jazen Jackson and of course Mackey from Ole Miss suspended for a bar fight earlier this week........also from Louisiana. We rank in the top ten in producing both D 1 football players and NFL players and I am sure # 1 in those that are later incarcerated.

Maybe justice will be served and Jarrett Lee a 5th yr senior will get his just reward and have a phenomenal game in Texas in his return to his home state

PS Rick not sure where you got your info about Nathan Fisher being the best high priced defense attorney in the state. My son and his went to hs together and played basketball as well.........a good attorney, rather pricey but certainly far from the best. If I neede a criminal attorney, I would not choose Nathan Fisher. And word on the talk shows today is that an arrest will be made today or tomorrow.......guess we'll see.

    David,

I read several articles that stated Fisher was one of the better or best defense attorneys in the state.

[u">Foxsports[/u">- "The football players have hired one of the best lawyers in Louisiana"
[u">Outkickthe Coverage[/u">- "It's far from the most serious case that Fisher, a renowned defense attorney in the state, has undertaken. Remember the police shootings on Danziger Bridge a few days after Katrina that ultimately led to five officers being convicted? Fisher helped to uncover the New Orleans police's lies in that case. He's an impressive guy, and you can watch him interviewed about that case on video here. As criminal defense attorney's go, you probably can't do much better.
[u">Shreveport Times[/u">- Fisher has represented LSU football players and other LSU athletes who have either been arrested or are facing possible arrest since the 1980s. The four players and/or their families contacted Fisher Saturday, and he took the case on a pro bono basis (for free) to start with as he often does. Fisher represented former LSU quarterback Ryan Perrilloux for various legal matters in 2006 and 2007, including his role in a bar fight in 2007, and Perrilloux was not arrested when the investigation concluded.
