Mel the captial gain tax has always been in play......it has just varied in what percentage it was dependent upon whom was in office or controlling Congress. You buy 5 shares of Walmart, Microsoft whatever you know going in at some point a captial gain tax must be paid. Generally speaking most people don't seek out a tax on their private property in 2000+ long healthcare bill. As the sweet princess told us.........we must pass BEFORE you can find out whats hidden inside.......and more surprises to come.

Pete I think he got his answer to his question.

Romney, when they figured out what he would save in taxes if the Romney/Ryan tax plans were put into place, he would be saving millions, that is when I truly realized why these people spend all this money on campagns, I always wondered why they would pump all that money in to them. I would like to see how the math works on that example you heard. Donate $100k and save millions! Really, if that were the case I think everyone would be donating, it might even turn the economy around.

That is the only reason I would call them evil haves, why not give to something that could really use the money or save it for the kids?

"save it for the kids" Really....Really.... Obama and the Dems don't seem to be worried about the "kids or grandkids" the way they are spending money. Our skyrocketing national debt has put our kids and grandkids behind the eightball before they even enter the workforce. How is that fair? Soon the feds/Ben Bernanke will be announcing that they are going to print more money to "stimulate" the economy.

    Andy,

The math ought to be real easy. Lets say someone makes $3 million dollars, at 39% tax rate, they would pay $1,170,000 dollars, at 20% which is the one number being bantered about the tax would be $600,000. And if they go to 0% on capital gains, they get to keep all 3 million dollars, that is if that is how they earned it, and those probably doing the most donating that is how they probably get most of their money. For a $100,000 investment to a campaign and hoping to get influence to the policy of their preference, that is a pretty good investment especially if they get the return they hope for. Of course 3 million for most of those making donations are small potatoes but I think I have shown you the math you requested.

Of course that's just simple math before any deductions are taken, money reinvested in tax deferred accounts and other advantages that are there to be used.

That also doesn't factor in Jon's example, by these taxes do we discourage the wealthy to spend money knowing they will have to pay capital gains tax when they sell, or estate taxes their children have to pay when they inherit? According to David's comments, if I interpret them correctly, no it doesn't seem so.

As to your second statement about being fair to the kids, you are correct about it's not fair to the kids that the country debt has gone up like it has, maybe if President Bush would have paid for the wars he was started or paid for the donut hole in Medicare part D instead of cutting taxes, if President Obama would have let all the Bush/now Obama tax cuts expire maybe that would have helped the debt, but of course this could have caused numerous other problems. So how do we get out of debt now? The economy has to get moving, since private sector does not want to spend the trillions it sits on, who else is going to do it? The government is basically left to try and stimulate the economy, or raise some taxes or both. If you want to get rid of the debt, revenues have to be raised and spending has to be cut, let's debate all of that, how we do it, I'm sure solutions could be had if the politics were kept out of it.

    Greetings;

Don't know if this is the right place but if were talking middle class anything goes.

Why don't the Senate & House reverse the 15% tax we have to pay on Social Security. Bring it back the way it was before Democratic Vice President Al Gore broke the tie vote and taxed S.S.

P.S. Did it ever occur to anyone that how the rich save money on taxes we can do the same? And, in all the years gone by why hasn't the House and Senate and whomever else is involved make a fair tax for everyone!

Capt. because we don't invest in the house and senate candidates like those with more money do (of course that is the cynical version), it's also we don't write and tell our representatives either. I agree with part of what you say, we can save money like the rich in some cases, mostly on investments, being able to maximize 401K contributions and the like, they aren't living pay check to pay check, where we debate the pros and cons of bumping up our 401K contributions and the like, in reality we don't have the disposable income to invest and then receive tax breaks, not that there is anything wrong with that, and of course the higher incomes makes it hard to take tax breaks that I know we do, medical deductions, heck our prescriptions alone meet the percentage requirements, let alone our premiums and doctor bills themselves. I'm all making it fairer, but not the fair tax, unless the math will work or things like medical prescriptions do not get taxed, of course that's me, everyone has their own deductions they want to keep.

On taxing social security, is there a certain level that triggers that 15%? Would be more curious to hear about it. I can agree with you on it, if the math is good.

    Subject: Simple Math Quiz

    This is amazing

MATH QUIZ: Reveals your favorite Movie!!

I am very good at math, so I did it in my head, then on paper, and finally
on a calculator just to confirm my numerical capabilities.

Each time I got the same answer, and sure enough, it IS my very favorite
    Show EVER!

DO NOT cheat and scroll down to the movies.

Do the math, THEN compare the results to the list of movies at the bottom

You will be AMAZED at how scary and true and accurate this test is.

    1. Pick a number from 1-9.

    2. Multiply that number by 3.

    3. Add 3.

    4. Multiply by 3 again.

    5. Your total will be a two digit number.

Add the first and second digits together to find your favorite show (of all
time) in the list of 17 movies below:

    Movie List:

    1. Gone With the Wind
    2. E.T.
    3. Blazing Saddles
    4. Star Wars
    5. Forrest Gump
    6. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
    7. Jaws
    8. Grease
    9. The Obama Farewell Speech of 2013
    10. Casablanca
    11. Jurassic Park
    12. Shrek
    13. Pirates of the Caribbean
    14. Titanic
    15. Raiders of the Lost Ark
    16. Home Alone
    17. Mrs. Doubtfire

    Now, isn't math something?

I came up with "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly", my all time favorite western! Uncanny indeed.

Wait. Maybe I did the math wrong. I 'll check on a calculator.
