The best one I've heard is when the guy showed up the next day saying he couldn't come to work because he had to do laundry.

Just had this yesterday. I had to stay home because my tv bill was too high and had to go in and fix it. Really? A phone call at lunch couldn't take care of it???? He's my irrigation tech, luckily it's winter here. Oh yeah, he wanted to use a sick day for it too!

One guy said that he needed to take his dog to the vet that day to get a fish hook out of it's mouth.

He has a dog and likes to take him fishing? I'd say this guy was a keeper!

This is actually a very real infection. I had it once, and it was not fun. My then-girlfriend's Siamese took a swipe at me and the next day I had a horrible fever and a yucky looking blister where it got me.

In this case, though, it was likely/probable that it was being used as an excuse, and there was no doctor's note given, but Cat Scratch Fever is not very pleasant.

In about 1990 I had a man that was a summer hire didn't show up for 3 weeks, no one was called his apartment was empty and his car parked in front. We called the police, they really didn't do much. He showed up one day to see if he still had a job. His reason for going was he got a job to skipper a sail boat to Hawaii and mad a few grand in just 3 weeks. He said just didn't have time to give anyone a call. It was a true story. But did not hold his job.

After scheduling some training for my assistant, he informed me that he would be unable to attend because he had to "teach his fish to swim" he said with a big smile. Just when I thought I heard it all...

Had a high school student a few years ago TELL me he goes to the lake every weekend in the summer. The shortest turf care career ever, one hour. It was all laid out to him in the interview that he worked every other and would have to abide by that schedule. First day, first hour he tells me he's not showing that weekend and I told him to leave. Funny because a University hockey recruiter contacted me as a reference about the same kid a few months later. He didn't get a scholarship!! I still to this day wonder why he put that job on his application.

Best excuse I ever received was, "In jail for attempted rape".

An epic story of an alcoholic mechanic that culminated in a felony charge. Best shared over drinks.

ok I'll join in.........from way back.

We were hosting a senior golf classic and my bunker man calls in and says......"I can't come in, you're my only call from the cell." And after I blurted out some expletives because he was pulled over he says....."I'm forming my own group called DAM." What the heck is that........Drunks Against Mothers.

I recently had an employee call me to tell me that his cell phone had been shut off due to non payment. He called from his neighbors home at 6:00 am, told me he was not coming in because in case of an emergency he couldn't be contacted. What would we do without cell phones...Oh yeah, use landlines.

    No longer an employee here.

Had a guy not show up for an entire pay period. I held his last check for a couple of days and then mailed it to his house. He showed up that afternoon looking for his check and threatened to kick my ass because I had mailed it to him and was planning to go on vacation the next day and needed the money. Funny, my ass didn't get kicked....go figure.

That's why I shouldn't have a concealed carry permit, sometimes the temptation would overcome me.

Just got one last week. My girlfriend was at the hospital, but I did not have mine so I could not call to let you now I would be three hours late on a Saturday. Later in the day I called Mom to see what to bring for dinner, and by the way did they remove all the phones the hospital. She laughed and asked what we were starting at.

This may be the top reason an employee comes to work..

In the mid-eighties we hosted the Mens Ontario Amateur and were working hard to make the course look good. Back then we had an all manual irrigation system; night watereer would come in at 8pm and go all night. Labatts Brewery was sponsoring the event and a couple of weeks before the start brought ten cases of beer to my shop. We stacked them up in our kitchen for all to see. I said that after the event we would give everyone a case for their hard work.

The event was a great success, the highlight for me was going fishing with Gary Cowan and his son down on one of our ponds. Time to divide the beer and send everyone home..to our surprise the last four cases of beer were full of just empty bottles..turns out the water man would come in and put a few in the fridge and drink the night away while moving hoses and 808's! He always got his job done and it has provided me with a very funny story for many years..ed
