To summarize Randini's typically long winded post. "You catch more flies with honey."

Not poking fun at you, I agree with you. You've found a formula that is working well, particularly with a small crew. Andy's large budget, large staff situation may work differently. He's found a formula too.

I said earlier, that OT can be effectively cheaper if managed correctly. If you are gaining good work and good loyalty for that 15k per year, that is a bargain. JMHO.

My assistant hates overtime and I respect him for it. I budget for overtime and my boss is okay with that, so I see things a little differently. I have some really special people that I have not been able to give raises for years now. They are highly productive, but especially so when they are on overtime. If they make $12.00 per hour and work a 45 hour week, then the bottom line is that they made $12.66 per hour for the week. I can live with that.

I was just talking to a friend yesterday who informed me of a golf course in Southern California that had advertised for an assistant (36 hole property) and paid up to $45K. They had one applicant! I see the same market that everyone is describing. Why they didn't have a line for the interviews is beyond me. I just lost an assistant and will probably rewrite the job description calling the job a different title. I am guessing we will advertise it for about $36K. That is about what an assistant was making 13 years ago in San Diego in a far different economy. I wonder how many applicants I receive?

Can someone please explain why Gerald's post was removed? I read it and I do not remember it having any offensive content.

I assume Jason because he was a little to specific when discussing the ownership at his former course. Just a guess.

I was told in 2003 that i was no longer needed after 23 years. Went to work at The Home Depot and haven't regretted a minute of it. 40 hours a week, 4 weeks vacation and pay higher than the Supt. that replaced me, plus 2 bonuses a year

    Bob,

What do you do at Home Depot? I've been laid off in the late fall for the last two years and was wondering about working part-time at Home Depot or Lowe's during the 12 week layoff. At 58, I'm trying to be proactive just in case my club wants to "go in a different direction".

Andy Jorgensen said: I hear of all of these guys out of work and know many of them. But, when I advertised on GCSAA for a $26,000 a year 2nd Assistant job a few months back, I received a whopping 1 resume. No fresh out of college kid, no out of work Assistants, no out of work Superintendents and no spray tech or irrigation tech looking to move up. The only resume I got was from an out of work Assistant Golf Pro that just needed a job. Was it the posting? The pay? The location? Me? I don't know. But we ended up filling the position internally by bumping up one of our better guys. Like others said, there are many jobs out there if you take down the tunnel vision and be willing to get out of your comfort zone. Like others, I moved away from my family ten years ago with a two year plan to move back. Doesn't look like that will be happening anytime soon.

I see where Andy is coming from. I am looking for an assistant right now and have been for 3 months. I have it posted in 3 places and have not received a resume in a few weeks and only got about 4 before that. I am offering $30k in a company that owns/manages 60+ courses nation wide and 25 here in GA. I know it isn't a job that a former superintendent would love to have, but it is still a job. I don't know where all of these guys that are graduating from turf school are going, but they aren't applying for our assistant jobs. And it is sad that my old assistant left the industry to do....... real estate appraisals.

The forum police are like Gestapo. They work in secret and never explain. They are totally unaccountable to us members and live by their own, mysterious rules. We are not allowed to know who they are or why they do what they do.

It is a total lack of respect and consideration by the GCSAA for its members.

    Does anyone else agree?

I am an a-hole. When it comes to judging my behavior I take the word of others, except David, Pete and that other guy.

I would, but at the risk of being blackballed I will defer. Sorry Steve, you are on your own.
