STRONG TEAMS, SAFE COURSES

May 13, 2026

Golf course safety is not just a compliance requirement, it is a culture that starts with leadership and is reinforced daily through training, communication, and example. For superintendents, balancing course conditions with crew wellbeing requires a proactive and structured approach both on and off the course.

On the course, situational awareness is critical. Crews operate heavy machinery, navigate uneven terrain, work near water hazards, and face a variety of weather conditions. Establishing clear protocols such as proper equipment operation procedures and lightning evacuation plans can significantly reduce risk. Morning briefings are a simple but powerful tool to set expectations, identify potential hazards, and reinforce best practices. Personal protective equipment, including hearing and eye protection, should always be treated as mandatory rather than optional.

Off the course, safety extends to agronomy centers and storage areas. Fuel storage and equipment upkeep all require strict adherence to safety standards. Proper labeling, accessible Safety Data Sheets, and ensuring everyone is adhering to proper protocols help prevent incidents before they occur.

Training new crew members is where long-term safety habits are formed. A phased onboarding process can be more effective than overwhelming new hires on their first day. Begin with core safety principles, then gradually introduce equipment and responsibilities under close supervision and as their responsibilities increase.

Superintendents can also lean on industry leading resources from GCSAA. The new Video Training Series provide practical, easy-to-follow instructions on equipment use and safe practices, making them an excellent complement to in-house training. In addition, the Greenkeeper Certificate Program offers structured education that helps employees who want to take their skill set to the next level build foundational knowledge while demonstrating a commitment to professionalism and safety.

Consistency remains the foundation of any successful safety program. Regular refreshers, seasonal updates, and brief team discussions keep safety top of mind. When superintendents lead by example and prioritize their team’s wellbeing, they create an environment where both people and course conditions can thrive.
