Communication is Key (Part Two)

Apr 30, 2020

As states begin to ease restrictions as it pertains to golf, it is more important now than ever to communicate with all entities involved at your facility. In part two of this two-part blog series, I will focus on communicating with the proper individuals both on and off the golf course. (Read Communication is Key: Part 1.)

  • Golfers

Golfers also must play their role while at the golf course. It is important golfers are well versed on the proper social distancing requirements at your facility and know how to proceed as they arrive on property, during their round and once their round is completed. Be sure to work with clubhouse and proshop staff as you collaborate on golfing procedures and be sure that golfers are well informed.

  • Media

I know not everyone has had media requests during this time, however, as state executive orders have been announced, we have seen increased local media coverage on certain aspects of our game. If you do receive a media request, please reach out to your local chapter, GCSAA and your field staff representative. Resources are available to help you navigate and prepare for these requests should you receive one.

  • Develop a Plan

Ultimately, this is what it is all about. Once you have communicated with the appropriate parties and determined which course of action you and your team are going to take, it’s important to develop the appropriate plan. Once your plan is developed, it’s important to communicate it with all involved. Wisconsin is a prime example of this. Golf facilities in America’s Dairyland had one week from the time the executive order was announced to courses allowing play. Superintendents there were well prepared as plans were discussed and put in place. As executive orders ease restrictions on golf, ensure everyone is aware of your reopening process and know their roles moving forward. GCSAA has created a Back2Golf Toolkit to help you prepare your course, facility and crew open the doors if you have been closed and assist with the transition process.

  • Get Involved
Local affiliated GCSAA chapters and chapter leaders know how golf facilities have been affected by COVID-19. These individuals have been at the forefront of this fluid situation and have been an invaluable resource for members. If you would like to be part of your local chapter or serve on the board of directors, please reach out to your chapter executive director or board. GCSAA Grassroots Ambassadors have also been instrumental in communicating the value of golf to state and federal lawmakers and have capitalized on existing relationships. State golf coalitions or alliances have also allowed allied associations to work together and connect with state legislators to speak with one voice as it pertains to golf.
