Around 45 individuals from the EPA and United States Fish and Wildlife Service participated in a golf course tour to showcase GCSAA's environmental and agronomic Best Management Practices on April 9, 2025.
The first tour stop was held at the US Naval Academy Golf Course in Annapolis. GCSAA member Eric David, CGCS, provided a presentation indoors to attendees before taking them out to the golf course to show them stations of information that included a display table on turfgrass; a discussion on irrigation systems and showcasing his rain gardens; a demonstration of tech tools used as part of a golf course management; and a look at his mowing and spraying equipment. Attendees used a moisture meter to determine how wet the putting green soil was.
The second tour stop was held at Mountain Branch Golf Course in Joppa. Logan Freeman, superintendent, also showcased his professional land management skills with a presentation starting in the clubhouse and progressing to different stations on the course. Freeman disucssed the envionmental small footprint of the most intensity managed areas of the course, moisture management and habitat considerations.
David and Freeman are both active Grassroots Ambassadors and understand the importance of educating individuals who make decisions that impact golf facilities. Many attendees had never been to a golf course and asked many questions.
More information will be shared in a future issue of Golf Course Management magazine.
