San Antonio rolls out the red carpet for the Golf Industry Show

by Steve Randall | Jan 17, 2018
San Antonio River Walk

We hope many of you are gearing up for the Golf Industry Show in San Antonio.  We look forward to another exceptional event.  If you are still undecided on attending, we want to give you every opportunity!  Remember, all members receive a one-time complementary admittance to the event.

San Antonio is a very affordable city.  The convention center is a short walk from most of the hotels downtown.  In addition, the Riverwalk is a top spot for activities when not in the convention center.

What's new in 2018?
There is a boatload of new education.  From handling conflict management to plant and soil interactions, we are confident you will find information you are looking for.

We've also boosted education for equipment managers and assistants.  Whether it's an agronomic topic or a session on business, communications and leadership, we have you covered!

How about students?
As many know, students are the future of the profession.  This year, the annual turf bowl competition will be held Thursday, February 8.  Many of the nation's top universities will compete.  The announcement of the winners will be held at the closing celebration.

...And about the closing celebration?

Actor, Comedian and Impressionist Darrel Hammond will provide humor and entertainment to conclude the event.  Hammond is best known for his 14 years on Saturday Night Live.  Hammond has thrilled audiences with impressions of Bill Clinton, Donald Trump, Sean Connery among others.

...But what about the start?
The opening night celebration recognizes the best in the profession with awards for environmental leadership and stewardship, advocacy for the golf industry, superintendent-authored articles, and individuals who have made substantive and enduring contributions to the game of golf. You will also be introduced to the Class of 2017 – superintendents who have completed the requirements to be certified golf course superintendents (CGCS).

The highlight of the event will be the presentation of GCSAA's highest honor, the Old Tom Morris Award, to Ernie Els, a four-time major champion, member of the World Golf Hall of Fame (2010) and founder of the Els for Autism Foundation (2009).

The Old Tom Morris Award is given annually to an individual who, through a continuing lifetime commitment to the game of golf, has helped to mold the welfare of the game.

Chapters, chapters, chapters
Tuesday, a full-day session for chapter executives and key chapter leaders will be held to discuss trends in the industry.  Peer-to-peer learning, updates on vital GCSAA programs, and attendee networking will highlight the event.

Wednesday morning, we will have our annual chapter president breakfast and mixer.  This short session will allow chapter presidents to network, and have conversations with peers from across the country.

Many chapters will host their respective networking events Wednesday night, across San Antonio.  Hope to see you there.

There's more?
This is just a sample of the activities provided.  The event kicks off with our GCSAA Golf Championships.  Various formats are provided to participants, including a championship format, point-quota event, four-ball and scramble.

The show floor will be a great source of education.  Topics from Best Management Practices, to government affairs, to preparing for a championship will be provided.

An expanded "Inside the Ropes" area will complement our exhibitors.  This new and improved VIP experience will include a 28,000-square foot interactive space featuring bunker and equipment displays, irrigation education, golf course dog demonstrations, and the GCSAA TV Stage.

All of this activity will be located right next to the GIS registration area, where you will also find the GIS Merchandise/Bookstore and EIFG Silent Auction. Inside the Ropes aims to provide GIS attendees with a different experience than they might find in a typical trade show setting. This realistic golf course design, construction and maintenance area gives attendees a unique space to interact with colleagues and exhibiting industry partners.

Don't miss out!
We feel the value and experience of the event will help you bring unique, time saving and cost-cutting ideas back to your facility.  The networking opportunities allow you to meet people you will stay in contact for a lifetime.  The time to attend is now!

See you in San Antonio!
