Lyon Oaks Golf Course in Wixom, Mich., recently achieved a remarkable milestone by hosting two GCSAA First Green field trips within a single week (a feat they have accomplished before). This achievement, yet again, underscores the course's commitment to environmental education and community engagement.
The First Green program, a GCSAA program, utilizes golf courses as interactive classrooms to teach students about science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) concepts. Lyon Oaks, an 18-hole course run by Oakland County, sits among 1,000 acres of parkland, which makes it an ideal setting for these educational experiences.
During the field trips, students participated in hands-on activities that highlighted the intersection of golf course management and environmental stewardship. These included demonstrations on soil science, irrigation systems, turf management and wildlife habitat conservation. Such engagements not only create lasting connections, but also inspire the next generation to consider careers in the golf industry and environmental sciences.
Hosting two field trips in such a short timeframe required extensive planning and coordination. The success of these events is a testament to the dedication of Lyon Oaks staff and volunteers, led by Shayne Skolnik, a certified golf course superintendent (CGCS) and 32-year GCSAA Class A member. By opening their doors to students, Lyon Oaks has reinforced its role as a community hub for learning and environmental awareness.
