As March came and went in a seemingly blink of an eye, chapters continued to use this month to improve upon, and create, new spring education events. The Northern Great Lakes Chapter continued to offer first-class education — although technically in the last couple days of February — over the course of a day and half. Focusing on both turfgrass and non-turfgrass related topics, the NGL members got their money's worth with a plethora of education available. Along with networking time and a silent auction, the event is truly one of the best ways to officially kick-off the spring education season.
New this year, the Michigan GCSA education committee and board opted to forgo the usual three spring education events held across the state, and replaced it with an evening and morning sessions dubbed: 'The Best 24 Hours in Turf'. Taking place in Grand Rapids at the historic Amway Grand Hotel, the event featured a variety of turfgrass and industry education from some of the best in business, including: 19-year GCSAA member Dan Meersman from the Philadelphia Cricket Club, Dr. Thom Nikolai of MSU, and 10-year GCSAA member Dr. Bill Kreuser of the University of Nebraska. Along with the NGL event, the new format allowed plenty of time to network with colleagues and catch up with old friends.
The Kentuckiana GCSA continues to offer one of the best spring education events with their Mini Pesticide Conference. The timing of the events allows attendees to meet with vendors and address any concerns or questions they may have as the growing season is set to begin. Along with education from Dr. Travis Shaddox of the University of Kentucky, this a great way for the members of the KGCSA to network and discuss the challenges of a year when Mother Nature has not cooperated.
Hats off and a huge thank you to the education committees and board members who work tirelessly on behalf of their members. These individuals continue to produce first-rate and relevant education and networking events across the region, and these events continue to showcase their value to members. Best of luck to everyone as we move into the early portion of the growing season!
