As we move through the holiday season – where did Thanksgiving go by the way – this is often a time to give thanks, spend some great time with family and friends, reflect on the previous season and plan for the upcoming year.
Let’s start with giving thanks. I would like to give a huge thank you to GCSAA members across the globe. If we go back roughly 18 months, there were question marks surrounding everything – golf being no exception. The golfing world stepped up, stood together, and came through these 18 months stronger. If it were not for the dedicated GCSAA members around the world, this would be a vastly different story. The devotion of golf course superintendents is second to none. The amount of time, passion, energy, commitment – this list goes on and on – they put into their profession is truly inspiring. I am thankful for their support and couldn’t imagine being in any other industry.
I was fortunate to spend time this past week with family in Nashville. Even between remodeling a bathroom, hanging Christmas lights and cleaning the garage, it was a great time. I hope each of you reading this had a wonderful Thanksgiving and were able to spend time with loved ones. As Christmas approaches, I encourage you to spend time with family and friends and truly enjoy what makes this time of year so special.
Throughout 2021 I often heard – and am guilty of saying – this year was closer to normal. This year however was anything but normal for many golf course superintendents. Without bringing down the cheer of the holiday season, I won’t go into all the challenges facing golf course superintendents, but staffing shortages, increased play, and Mother Nature were just a few of the challenges overcome by superintendents this year. Again, a testament to the dedication they display each day.
As you plan for the 2022 season, GCSAA is doing the same. Working on staffing solutions, advocating on your behalf, and promoting the work you do are just the tip of the iceberg. As 2022 plans come into focus, I wish you a Merry Christmas and nothing but the best in the new year. Thank you again to all of you who make this industry so special and for all you do!
