I Skipped the Introduction, Allow Me to Introduce Myself

by Katrin Wolfe | Jun 17, 2021

I started blogging and never really introduced myself.

I would describe myself as an outsider to golf course management. I am an amateur golfer who loves the game so much that it is lead me through all my careers. Without golf courses and the staffs that managing them, I wouldn't have had a wonderful time in the golf world. I come to the GCSAA not as a superintendent or turfgrass professional, but as a administrator for collegiate athletics. I worked in higher education for over 10 years helping NCAA Division II student-athletes. I am a helper and I want people to succeed. I worked to help athletes make their dreams come true on the field and now I get the opportunity to help superintendents and golf management personnel make their professional dreams come true (amongst other things 😊).

That's the short summary. But, let's start how golf has guided me through the years and finally to the GCSAA. I am a lifelong golfer. I think I started playing as soon as I could walk.  come from a family of golfers; I think it's a requirement to learn to play golf if your last name is Wolfe. I grew up at phenomenal golf course called Sunnehanna Country Club in Johnstown, Penn. To this day it remains my personal favorite; it started my love for turn-of-the-20th-century course designers. Sunnehanna is an A.W. Tillinghast design.

I played some tournaments growing up but when I got into high school, I really started getting into the junior golf scene. I started seeing the college golf coaches out at the tournaments and thought, "well, that would be fun to do in college." So I made that my goal and I succeeded. I accepted a scholarship to play collegiate golf at Penn State University. Junior golf introduced me to the meaning of tournament play and all of its crazy challenges. It also allowed me to see what a golf course is truly made of when it is prepped for a tournament.

Let me tell you, I was spoiled for my four years at PSU. The academic support, the gear, and the competition was top notch. During my freshman year, I made the travel team and was lucky to be a four-year starter. We traveled all over the country and made stops in Puerto Rico and Ireland. We made it to the NCAA tournament and succeed in winning several times. I got to play some of the best courses in the country highlighted by Bay Hill, Pinehurst 2 and Philadelphia Country Club. During my time at PSU, I also qualified for 2 US Women's Amateur Championships and made it to the quarterfinals of several top amateur match play events. I was honored to be a Big Ten Academic All-Conference and Academic All-American. I studied kinesiology and graduated with honors. It was an incredible 4 years.

After college, I played some amateur golf and professional qualifiers. I kept my amateur status. However, I learned professional golf tours were not for me and went to graduate school(s). I attended West Virginia University, then later University of Pittsburgh for master degrees, and focused on my professional growth. I wanted to help student-athletes. Golf allowed me to have the best college experience possible and I wanted others to have the same feeling. I got that opportunity at University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, a small branch campus in my hometown. I was the director of wellness programming and athletic compliance. I enjoyed every minute I had with the school. I later moved to East Stroudsburg University to be the associate athletic director for compliance.

In 2015, after almost 10 years out of competitive golf, I decided to return to competition.  I signed up for the US Women's Mid-Amateur qualifier and surprised myself by qualifying. It was a great welcome back to competitive golf and I have enjoyed staying involved in the game. I continue to play in local, state, and national amateur golf especially mid-am competitions. Getting back into competitive golf opened my thoughts about getting involved in the game professionally. I wanted to help grow the game and I started exploring opportunities.

In early spring 2021, I applied for the Mid-Atlantic field rep position for GCSAA. I was excited to see the position become available. I was definitely nervous taking the step to apply for the position. I come into the world from the golfers perspective and a great respect for course management. I would not have been able to achieve what I have done without the great work of superintendents and course management professionals.  It was time for me to give back. Fortunately for me, it worked out and I was able to accept the position. I am excited to be here helping out the wonderful people who make the courses great. I am also excited to see how we can help future generations get into the game and profession. It's great to be here to help others.
